Looking for CASC Supervisors-Educators and Consultants 

The Toronto Centre for Applied Buddhism is looking for two to three CASC certified supervisor/educators/consultants to work in an inter-disciplinary team to provide practicum education and supervision to students and interns to work with incarcerated and/or palliative and end-of-life populations across Canada.

Recognizing that it is difficult to find CASC supervisors/educators/with background in Buddhism and prison chaplaincy, we welcome supervisors-educators of any background with an interest in working with Buddhist students in Buddhist prison chaplaincy and Buddhist contemplative care for end-of-life to apply.

Toronto Centre for Applied Buddhism

TCAB offers a new on-line community-based practicum education program with two half units of 200 hours per half unit in End-of-Life and Bereavement Care. Each half unit typically takes 4 to 8 months to complete. Students will select relevant on-line courses offered by TCAB as well as other Buddhist temples and centres, offer Buddhist counselling services (one to one or in a group), attend group supervision with peers and dyadic supervision with a supervisor or mentor on-line and keep track of own progress in meditative practices.

  • Position: Spiritual Care Supervisor-Educator/Consultant residing anywhere in Canada (several positions) to co-lead the above program.
    Posting Date: June 12, 2022 Expected Start Date: First week of September 2022
    Closing Date: Until the positions are filled.
    Employment Type: Temporary, part-time and contract
    Work Hours: Variable – to be arranged
  • Leading/co-leading didactic learning and supervision group (30 hours per semester, i.e. 2.5 hours per week).
  • Individual/dyadic supervision (12 to 24 hours per semester, i.e. one to two hours per week in a semester) to be contracted with students
  • Student evaluation and consultation as needed.

Renumeration: $60 per hour

Position Summary:

The Spiritual Care Supervisor-Educator is responsible for the provision of virtual education and supervision as part of the Buddhist Psychology and Spiritual Care Program with TCAB in accordance with the standards of the Canadian Association for Spiritual
Care (CASC/ACSS) for a Course-Based Pastoral Counselling Education (PCE) program. The incumbent develops curriculum in coordination with the curriculum working group and supervises Buddhist spiritual care residents/learners in their counselling/work in
providing Buddhist end-of-life and/or bereavement care across Canada.

Qualifications: 

  • Certification as a Supervisor-Educator with the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care https://spiritualcare.ca/certification/certified-supervisor-educators/
  • Qualified to perform the controlled act of psychotherapy (Ontario Regulated Health Professions Act) in the province where the incumbent resides.
  • Minimum 5 years clinical experience and meet eligibility criteria to be a clinical supervisor with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (i.e. 30 hours or more of directed learning in clinical supervision, 1000 hours of direct client contact, 150 hours of supervised practice)
  • Extensive experience with spiritual and mental health care in end-of-life and/or palliative settings
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Knowledge of various models of spiritual care and psychotherapy
  • Successful ability to utilize spirituality-informed psychotherapy in working with diverse populations
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to supervise and mentor volunteers and students
  • Knowledge of Buddhism (an asset) or a willingness to learn and apply Buddhist practices
  • Sensitivity to and willingness to work with diverse individuals
  • Strong verbal and written English-language communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, crisis, and other therapeutic skills
  • Access to stable internet connection for Zoom video-conferencing Responsibilities:
  • Provide individual/dyadic supervision, group supervision, and education to learners in the practicum program with TCAB and/or to TCAB volunteers
  • Provide evaluation for student(s) being supervised individually/dyadically
  • Liaise with CASC/ACSS and/or other organizations to collaborate and optimize learner experiences and consolidation of the course-based PCE program with TCAB
  • Aid in the Supervised Pastoral Education (SPE) accreditation process with CASC/ACSS
  • Help with screening and selecting applicants to the TCAB practicum education program
  • Design and implement a Buddhist-based curriculum (with support of a working group) for spiritual care providers in end-of-life contexts
  • Performs other duties not stated above as required by the position
