Spiritual Care Professional – Teaching Supervisor-Educator

Sinai Health is looking for a Spiritual Care Professional – Teaching Supervisor-Educator to support our Spiritual Care Department at our Mount Sinai Hospital Campus and Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital Campus.

About This Opportunity:

The Spiritual Care Professional – Teaching Supervisor-Educator, functions as a member of the health care team providing spiritual and religious support. This opportunity has a direct patient/community care component, along with a teaching, leadership and administrative component.

The successful candidate will focus on the spiritual, religious and emotional needs of patients, families and staff. Spiritual and religious care is provided in a manner that is multifaith, respecting of cultural, traditional and religious diversities, complimenting and linking with community faith partners. Additionally, the educational component involves maintaining educational programs affiliated with accredited universities, collaborating with a manager in overlooking educational needs of the department, and sharing responsibilities of professional practice lead.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Direct Patient / Community Care

  • Provides spiritual care to patients, families, staff and volunteers.
  • Initiates regular Spiritual Care visits with patients and responses to requests or referrals made by patients, family or staff and leaders of faith communities.
  • Assesses spiritual, emotional and religious needs of patients visited.
  • When requested and when appropriate, assists patients and families in the process of making challenging moral and ethical decisions based on faith and spiritual beliefs.
  • Facilitates the grief and bereavement process
  • Assists with care after death, when appropriate
  • Ensures that patients have the opportunity to contact the faith community of their choice and facilitates the contacts when appropriate or where requested.

Teaching, Leadership and Administrative

  • Maintains a CASC/ACSS approved CPE program
  • Advertises, recruits, coordinates and supervises CPE students in accordance with hospital, university and professional association standards
  • Participates in IPE program and provides educational sessions that include didactics, simulation/role play, shadowing, etc.
  • Participates in the life of the hospital community through shared committee work, as it relates to the vision of the Spiritual Care Department.

Key Job Requirements:

Education:

  • Master of Divinity or an equivalent degree from an accredited educational institution
  • Certified Teaching Supervisor-Educator within the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC/ACSS) or a level 2 Provisional Teaching Supervisor

Qualifications

  • Experience as a Spiritual Care Professional in a health care setting
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a fully participating member of the health care team
  • Applicants with proven equivalent recent and related training and experience may also be considered

Core Competencies

  • Knowledge of various models of spiritual care and their appropriateness to different practice contexts.
  • Awareness of the process of spiritual development and the provision of care appropriate to patient’s developmental states throughout the care process.

Accountabilities:

  • Accountable to the Manager of Spiritual Care.
  • Maintains active membership in CASC/ACSS.
  • Maintains active membership in CRPO.
  • Functions in a collaborative matter with all members of the health care team.
