St. Stephen’s College

St. Stephen’s College in Edmonton, Alberta, wishes to appoint a Co-Chair of the Department of Psychotherapy and Spirituality with the rank of Professor of Integrative Counselling Psychotherapy. The post is available for 1 January 2023, or sooner if possible. The deadline for application is 15 July 2022.

The appointee will be a clinician-scholar, teacher, and mentor who is committed to the training of masters-level practitioners in the fields of psychotherapy, counselling, and spiritual care. The successful candidate will have (or be near completion of) a doctoral degree in psychology, psychotherapy, counselling, or related field. Experience in spiritual care is preferred but not required.

General Position Overview:

The Co-Chair of the Department of Psychotherapy and Spirituality (“Co-Chair”), in collaboration with the other Co-Chair, provides oversight and direction for all matters pertaining to the Department of Psychotherapy and Spirituality. Chiefly this includes advising and mentoring current and prospective students, coordination of the capstone and/or thesis process, and assisting with the oversight and development of departmental programs such as the Master of Psychotherapy and Spirituality (MPS), Graduate Certificates, and related department curriculum. Teaching assignment is one course per year. It is desired but not required that the applicant has a background and/or experience in either Psycho-Spiritual Therapy or Spiritual Care (e.g., CASC/ACSS training). There will be ongoing duties related to management of the department (admissions, program committee meetings, Convocation, etc.). This is a part-time (0.6 FTE) appointment. Salary will be negotiated with the academic Dean and benefits are in accordance with the Faculty Personnel Policies of the College.

Qualifications and Skills

Educational Qualifications and Professional Competencies:

Earned doctoral degree or its equivalent in a field of psychology, psychotherapy, counselling, or related field
Background and experience in theology and/or spirituality beneficial
Background and experience in art therapy beneficial
Preferred but not required: background and/or experience in either Psycho-Spiritual Therapy or Spiritual Care (e.g., training and/or certification with the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care/Association canadienne de soins spirituels (CASC/ACSS)
Experience in clinical counselling practice, active clinical membership and registration in a professional association (e.g., Association of Counselling Therapy of Alberta (ACTA), the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP), Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), Canadian Art Therapy Association (CATA), or Canadian Association for Spiritual Care/Association canadienne de soins spirituels (CASC/ACSS)).
Experience in program management and development, curriculum planning, teaching, and academic policy and implementation
Ability to multi-task, and to work to close deadlines
Excellent written and oral communications skills, and conversant with social media tools
Ability to liaise with stakeholder groups in the community, e.g., professional and academic associations (ACTA, CCPA, CATA, CASC/ACSS), practicum partners, examiners, supervisors, committee members, University community
Awareness of, and essential agreement with, the College’s Vision, Mission, and Values Statement
Awareness of regulation developments for psychotherapists across the country, especially with respect to the upcoming transition in Alberta from the Association of Counselling Therapy of Alberta (ACTA) to the College of Counselling Therapy of Alberta (CCTA)

Primary Functions

Primary Responsibilities

Advise and mentor current and potential students, and Associate Faculty related to the Department, including working with the Dean’s office concerning disciplinary issues that might arise
In conjunction with the other Co-Chair, assist with the oversight, planning, and development of curriculum, courses, workshops, and seminars related to the departmental programs. The Co-Chair will work closely with the other Co-Chair to give joint oversight to the Core Stream of the MPS degree, and will work independently to navigate and position the MPS program for the training needs of Alberta’s Spiritual Health profession within the evolving landscape of provincial regulation.
Manage and coordinate Capstone and Thesis processes, and consult (as needed) with the other departmental faculty regarding Practicum matters.
In conjunction with the Dean’s office, assist with the recruitment of teaching faculty.
Advise Associate Faculty regarding the development of course syllabi and program curriculum.
Collaborate with other agencies and institutions as may be appropriate, including remaining knowledgeable of regulatory developments and counselling competencies as they pertain to the Department
Share with other members of the Faculty and Staff in the collegial life of the College, which includes serving on committees and possibly the Board
Work closely with the Principal and Dean, Faculty Council, Senate, and the Registrar’s Office in matters relating to approvals, student progress, instructional procedures, and department programming developments
Participate in the admissions, orientation, and graduation processes for the Department
Attend to her/his need for ongoing professional development through reading, research and publication, and attendance at meetings of appropriate professional societies
Teach one core course annually in the Department’s curriculum
Carry out other responsibilities and duties as assigned

Working Relationships

The Co-Chair:

is a full member of the Faculty of the College, and is expected to attend regular meetings of Faculty Council, as well as emergent meetings as possible
is accountable to Faculty colleagues in matters of Faculty responsibility
is a full voting member, ex officio, of the Psychotherapy and Spirituality Program Committee and works with the Committee to help set program direction, policy and promotion
is a member of the St Stephen’s staff and expected to attend periodic meetings of the staff
may be asked to represent the College on other committees or working groups, internal or external, in rotation with other Staff and Faculty and in consultation with the Dean
works closely with the other Co-Chair, the Dean’s Office, the Director of Academic and Administrative Services (Registrar), and the Department Administrator of the Department of Psychotherapy and Spirituality
