The Spiritual Care Department is seeking an experienced Chaplain/Spiritual Care Practitioner to provide high quality spiritual care to patients and their families. The successful candidate will join an expert team in providing spiritual care 24/7 at St. Michael’s and work as a fully participating member of the health care team in a variety of program areas.

This position is part time (0.3 FTE) and requires an occasional 12 hour night shift (20:00 – 8:00) and occasional weekend shift (8:00 – 20:00).

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Providing and promoting high quality spiritual care that is consistent with the Mission and Values of St. Michael’s Hospital for patients and their families.
  • Providing care that is respectful of cultural, traditional, and religious diversity and supporting ethical discussion and complex decision making
  • Actively engaging patients, their families and staff in developing an understanding of the relationship between spiritual, religious, physical and psychosocial well being
  • Enabling effective team collaboration between and amongst stake holders and function as a full participant on a wide variety of in-patient units
  • Facilitating a variety of staff support strategies nurturing collaboration & supportive community
  • Being available and accessible to patients and families within the continuum of care, especially those experiencing spiritual distress
  • Assessing the spiritual religious and cultural care needs of patients and implementing appropriate intervention plans
  • Providing appropriate opportunities for worship, prayer, sacraments, and other rituals

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Specialist certification with the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care and current membership in good standing
  • Undergraduate degree and a Master of Divinity degree or equivalent
  • Ability to relate theology and behavioral science to the practice of spiritual care
  • Knowledge of various models of spiritual care and their appropriate use in a variety of practice contexts
  • Must be able to function as a member of both the spiritual care team and interprofessional teams and be capable of working autonomously
  • Clinical experience required, experience working in healthcare, preferred
  • Experience working with diverse religious, spiritual and cultural needs, required
  • Knowledge and experience working with First Nations, Inuit and Metis (FNIM) is an asset
  • Excellent communication (verbal/written English), interpersonal, organizational and problem-solving skills are essential
  • Demonstrated proficiency working with computer applications in a Windows environment (Word, Electronic mail)
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of St. Michael’s Hospital
  • Must have an excellent attendance record
  • Must be willing and capable of working 12 hour shifts: Occasional Weekends (8:00 – 20:00) & Nights (20:00 – 8:00) inclusive
